Use this guide to prepare for your family photoshoot at Discovery Park. This beautiful, remote location offers breathtaking backdrops that are perfect for capturing your family’s joy and connection. However, due to its remote nature and the hiking involved, a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The best way to book summer family photoshoots.)
Discovery Park’s diverse landscapes—from lush forests to sandy beaches—provide a variety of beautiful settings for your photos. Opt for light and airy outfits that reflect your family’s personality while ensuring comfort. Layers are key, as the weather can be unpredictable. Looking for my favorite dress? Click here to see. Choose comfortable footwear for the hike; you can bring your stylish shoes in a bag to change into for the photoshoot. View my wardrobe guide here.
Since some of the best spots for your family photoshoot at Discovery Park require a bit of hiking if you do not get a spot at the South parking lot, packing light but effectively is essential. Bring a small backpack with water, snacks, and any essentials your kids might need (like a favorite toy or blanket for comfort). Don’t forget sunscreen, bug spray, and a small first-aid kit just in case. Service can be spotty at the park so saving the Google Map section to your device will help you when you need to map your way out. Just in case, here’s a link to the map of the trails at the park.
The golden hour—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—is ideal for capturing that magical, soft light. Plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early to allow time for parking and perhaps having to hike into the photoshoot location. I know that sounds very early but parking is limited and you may have to hike in from the North or East parking lot instead of the South lot. I give up to 30 minutes of grace to allow for delays in hiking in. This way, everyone can be relaxed and ready to enjoy the session.
A photoshoot at Discovery Park is all about connecting with nature and each other. Encourage your children to explore and play during the session. This natural interaction not only brings out genuine smiles but also creates beautiful, candid moments. I’ll be there to guide you, but the more relaxed and in-the-moment you are, the better the photos will turn out.
