The holidays are a magical time, and capturing those cherished family moments in a Christmas photoshoot is a delightful way to preserve the memories. To ensure your family looks picture-perfect, here are some styling tips to keep in mind:
As a photographer who edits a very specific way, I tell all my clients that there are clothes for every day and clothes for photoshoots. They’re not always the same and the fit can be different than you’re used to. Here are my recommendations as you do your shopping for your mini sessions this holiday season.
I prefer clients lean towards simple patterns vs busy patterns, as small busy patterns can start to look a little crazy in a 2D rendering of your clothing. It can also create something called Moire. This is distracting and generally considered unpleasant for family photos. Select a few pieces with very simple large patterns or if you prefer smaller patterns make sure they’re spaced far apart from each other.
Color selection is important. avoid light reds – if you love red (who doesn’t around christmas time?) select a deep red even a less saturated color red is prefered. This is because bright lighter reds can cast color, meaning light can bounce off of the color and reflect that color onto your skin, creating very red faces. Yikes!

All matching outfits tend to blend all together and be impossible to tell where one persons body ends and another persons body starts. Black has a similar effect and swallows up all the light and starts to look sad and depressing instead of the sophisticated look you probably intended to achieve. Please do not wear an all black outfit or all matching outfits. Instead opt for shades of gray or cream or brown, and consider instead of all matching try wearing coordinating outfits in the same style (pajamas that are similar in style and in the same color palette bun not exact matches in style or color.)
Or if you’re looking at more traditional holiday cheer…
